Pg Dr Hj Md Esa Al-Islam bin Pg Hj Md Yunus started his career in Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in 1993 before joining CSTRAD. Prior joining UTB, he was attached to Gadong Power Station, in the Maintenance Department, Ministry of Development. Other than teaching engineering modules, his research interests are in creative engineering design and management, manufacturing systems and engineering, Micro and Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS & NEMS), Bionics, Green Technology and Unmanned Vehicle. He leads consultancy and corporate social responsibility works for private and public sectors. 

In 2002, he received Silver Award for Civil Service Award under UTB’s Material Testing Project. In 2006 and 2013, with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, he received PIKB and PSB respectively. In 2013, he was Chairman for UTB’s Brunei International Conference on Engineering and Technology (BICET) and UTB’s Council member. He was Chairman of SEAMEO VOCTECH Governing Board in 2013-2017. In 2014, he was appointed as Professional Board member for Architects, Professional Engineers and Quantity Surveyors (APEQS), at the Ministry of Development, Brunei Darussalam. He chairs Steering Committee for UTB’s International Conferences such as; Professional Communication For Business, Engineering and Technology (PCBET), Brunei International Conference on Engineering and Technology (BICET), International Finance and Banking Society Conference (IFABS), International Neural Network Society – Computational Intelligence in Information Systems Symposia Series (INNS-CIIS) and Multi-disciplinary International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence (MIWAI). In April 2016, he was appointed as Senior Assistant Professor (SAP) for Engineering. 

During his PhD, 2005 to 2008, he was assistant teacher in Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton and entrusted to supervise Internship Student from Japan. He was a facilitator for HRM V Sigma, teaching on “Creative techniques and Tools”, ILIA, UBD, 2009. In the same year, he was appointed as Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research. In 2011, he was appointed as Deputy Dean of Faculty of Engineering. In 2012, he was promoted as Dean for Faculty of Engineering. In 2013, he was appointed as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic (AVCA). The role involves overseeing the administrative work for all of the faculty, schools and Quality Assurance Unit. In 2014, he completed a one month course on Senior Management Programme (SMP2014), at Lee Kuan Yew, School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. In 2016, he was appointed as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Industry and Services (AVCIS). The role involves administrative work for external linkages with relevant Industries and internal services for faculty, schools, centres, offices and units. 

By the command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on 13th April 2020, he was appointed as Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Development) Ministry of Defence.

He is the second in the family of 4 siblings, married to Dr Hjh Noor Maya binti Hj Md Salleh with three children.
