HISTORY

The Directorate of Defence Policy was formed in 1985. Formerly, it was known as the Directorate of Politics and Organization where it encompassed four main sections namely the Legal Section, Public Relations Section, Research Section and Administration section. In light of the expanding roles of the Directorate, , a decision was made to change the name to the Directorate of Defence Policy in 2004, in the aim for it to be more focused in its roles and to act as a centralised player/coordinator pertaining to defence policy matters for the Ministry of Defence. In the year 2002, the Public Relations section was transformed into a unit and transferred to Office of Permanent Secretary. The same apply to Legal section in 2008.

The vision and mission of the Directorate is aligned to Ministry of Defence’s Mission and Vision. Among the main roles of the Directorate is to promote and enhance defence diplomacy in various level; internationally (UN), regionally (ASEAN and ASEAN Regional Forum) and bilaterally (with friendly countries).

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Enhance Defence Diplomacy at Bilateral and Multilateral Level
  • Increase Contributions to Regional Defence Cooperation
  • Provide Valuable Policy Advices

DEFENCE COOPERATION


The Ministry of Defence has been actively involved in regional cooperation especially through ASEAN meetings such as ADMM, ASEAN Working Group and ASEAN Regional Forum. On the multilateral level, cooperation is mainly at the United Nations and in support of its Security Council resolutions, relevant treaties, and conventions.

The roles of Directorate of Defence Diplomacy:

(1)    To enhance defence diplomacy at bilateral and multilateral level. This will entail:
  • MOU with key friendly countries
  • Ensuring continuous interaction with JDWC countries
  • To intensify Brunei’s role & importance in regional and multilateral level

(2)    Increase Contributions to Regional Defence Cooperation, which entails:

  • To ensure an enduring support from all ADMM member countries in Brunei Darussalam’s led initiatives, currently with the implementation of Direct Communications Link,  Logistics Support Framework
  • To promote interaction program for the next generation of leaders among ASEAN military and defence officers, by sustaining the ASEAN Defence Interaction Program
  • To ensure Brunei Darussalam’s continuous participation/support in ADMM EWGs program/initiatives
  • Strengthen our contribution towards regional peace through varied level of preparedness & deployment of troops/assets to areas of conflict/needs

(3)    Provide Valuable Policy Advices. This entail:

  •  Comprehensive coverage of policy advices and recommendations
