Haji Mohd Zakaria bin Haji Sarudin was appointed as Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence on 10 August 2018. Prior to this, he was the Senior Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Development from January 2015 to May 2018.
Haji Mohd Zakaria’s career has spanned over a range of appointments in development planning. He first began his career as a Town and Country Planning Officer at the Town and Country Planning Department from August 1984 to January 1997. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Acting Head of Environment Unit in the Ministry of Development from January 1997 to January 1999, and was eventually appointed as Head of the unit on 4 January 1999 until 29 April 2003. At the same time, he also held the portfolio as Acting Director for the Department of Environment, Park and Recreation from 1 May 2002 to 30 April 2003.
He was officially promoted as Director for the Department of Environment, Park and Recreation from 1 May 2003 and served for 8 years. He was later appointed as Director of Housing Development Department from June 2011 to September 2014.
Haji Mohd Zakaria graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Town and Country Planning in Polytechnic of the South Bank London in July 1984 and received a Certificate in Development Planning: Project Design and Evaluation in September 1987 from University College London. He later earned a Master of Science in Economic of Urbanisation and Managing City Economy in November 1995, also from University College London. In June 2003, he completed the Executive Development Programme for Senior Government Officers in the University of Brunei Darussalam.
Throughout his career, he was bestowed with several honours namely, ‘The Most Blessed Order of Setia Negara Brunei, Fourth Class (PSB)’ in 1998; ‘Meritorious Service Medal (PIKB)’ and ‘Long Service Medal (PKL)’ in 2007; ‘The Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei, Third Class (SMB)’ in 2008; and ‘The Most Blessed Order of Setia Negara Brunei, Third Class (SNB)’ in 2012.
Haji Mohd Zakaria was born on 20 September 1959. He is married to Pg Hajah Sarinah binti Pg Haji Mohd Salleh, and is blessed with 4 children.
